Papercutting is an easy and fun way to express your creativity. Having made them for a long time, we’ve found that they’re an excellent method to create a lovely card, particularly if you’re short on time.
What’s Required
An x-acto or similar knife can suffice as long as it has a sharp edge and is flexible enough to be used as a scalpel. You can’t obtain all the small details using a stanely knife/box cutter (usually). Scapulae are easier to use than X-actos since their blades don’t shatter when I use them.
Wherever you purchased the scalpel, spare blades are available. In order to ensure that this blade is compatible with your machine, make a note of its serial number (e.g., 10 A). I haven’t observed any difference in performance between various blade shapes.
If you’re looking for something a little more delicate, you may try rice paper, which is around the same thickness as 385 GSM (about 2 mm thick). Thinner papers are quicker to cut, but they are less forgiving of errors and ripping, making them less suitable for printing. Cutting forms out of thicker paper is more difficult, but it can also withstand more punishment. Newsagent card stock is a good choice for cards like these. Using black, dark blues, or purples provides a dramatic contrast, which I like.
To avoid having to erase any lines, print your picture on a separate sheet of paper and use it as a guide while drawing. Alternatively, you may select a picture online and cut it out, just as I did. Using line drawings from the early 1900s is a good option since the thinking for you is already done (also, depending on your country, it should be out of copyright).
Organize the Cards
On cards in Western nations, the fold is located on the left-hand side. You don’t want to make a mistake since it would be humiliating. Rather, we’ll take the card apart and paste the picture to its left side. The reason for this is because the cuts are always best on the side opposite to the one you cut, and we want everyone to see it. The first step is to begin cutting.
Decide which sections of the card should be coloured in and which should be omitted. I like to keep my flesh intact and my garments and other accessories trimmed away. While paper may be strong in tension if pulled from both ends, it is much weaker in shear. This is the most important thing to know while cutting paper (if you push on a point). When cutting out a piece of the backdrop, be sure to clip in all of your support lines first! When I’m in a rush, I tend to lose track of my cards, making them a little flimsy.
