The list of the top five latest cars in India starts with the Toyota Fortuner 2021. Given a facelift earlier this year, it witnesses some enhancements along with a 7-seater layout. In particular, Toyota offers the facelift with the revised front fascia, restyled front and end bumper, and new headlamps to keep it fresh in the segment. Apart from that, the new Fortuner also gets a new set of larger alloy wheels: 18-inch units for the base-spec version and massive dual-tone 20-inch wheels for the top-spec.
In addition to a fresher look, the Toyota Fortuner 2021 also comes with some feature updates such as a bigger 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, JBL sound system, wireless charger, and ventilated front seats. Meanwhile, the top-spec also gets added elements like a 360-degree parking camera, wireless charging pad, ambient lighting, a mildly updated instrument cluster, and a kick-to-open feature for the powered tailgate.
Mechanically, the new Toyota Fortuner comes with both petrol and diesel engine options. While the petrol one is the same 166PS/245Nm 2.7-litre seen in the previous model, the diesel one is now replaced by a more powerful 2.8-litre unit that puts out 177PS and 420Nm of max power and max torque. Transmission-wise, the 2021 Toyota Fortuner facelift is equipped with either a 6-speed MT and gets a choice of AT gearbox, as well. In the domestic market, the biggest competitors of the Fortuner are the Ford Endeavour, Mahindra Alturas G4, MG Gloster, VW Tiguan Allspace, and the Skoda Kodiaq petrol.
2021 Jeep Compass
Launch date: January 27, 2021
Ex-showroom price: Rs 16.99 – 28.29 lakh*
The facelifted Jeep Compass is among one of the best new cars in India to arrive in early 2021. In its latest avatar, the Jeep model witnessed slight aesthetic modifications that allow the bunky SUV to sport a fresher and more premium look. Specifically, the 2021 Jeep Compass now comes with a sleeker front grille along with revised fog lamps, an air dam, and a front bumper. More to that, it is also given three new eye-catching color options, including Techno Metallic Green, Bright White, and Galaxy Blue.
Coming to the inside, the new Jeep Compass stands out with a completely different interior design. To give the cabin a more modern feel, Jeep decided to replace the old-fashioned black-and-white layout with a premium all-black color scheme. Additionally, the automaker also packs its popular SUV with a host of top-notch features. Some notable elements include a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with FCA’s UConnect 5 and connected car tech, powered tailgate, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, auto AC, electronic parking brake, and a 360-degree camera. Meanwhile, the safety kit comes with six airbags, electronic stability control, rollover mitigation, hill assist, and panic brake assist.
Under the hood, the 2021 Jeep Compass retains the two powerful engines of the existing model. The first engine is a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit that puts out 163PS of power and 250Nm of torque while the other is a 172PS/350Nm 2.0-litre diesel motor. In terms of transmission options, both motors come equipped with a standard 6-speed MT. Besides, Jeep also offers the diesel variants with a 9-speed AT and a 4×4 option. Meanwhile, the turbo-petrol Compass gets a choice of 7-speed DCT gearbox only. In its segment, the new Jeep Compass 2021 rivals the MG Hector, Hyundai Tucson, Mahindra XUV500, Tata Harrier, Volkswagen T-Roc, and the Skoda Karoq.
2021 Tata Safari
Launch date: February 22, 2021
Ex-showroom price: Rs 14.69 – 21.45 lakh*
Another new car launch in 2021 involves the remarkable comeback of the iconic Tata Safari. Before eventually reviving the Safari icon, the domestic carmaker had introduced it in H7X concept, then naming it the “Gravitas”. Succeeding the flawless, old-gen Safari, the next-gen Safari can be said to be on a whole new dimension. First of all, it uses the new Harrier’s OMEGARC architecture that traces its root to the Lend Rover D8 platform. While the new Safari SUV looks similar to the Harrier in many ways, the car sets it apart thanks to a unique treatment aft of the C-pillar and the Safari’s signature roof styling. Also, the automaker gives its three-row SUV some subtle cosmetic enhancements like a redesigned headlamp covering, larger 18-inch alloys, an upright tailgate, and a revised rear profile with a refreshed tail lamp. Altogether, they allow the third-gen Safari to appear smarter and more mature than its 5-seater Harrier sibling.
Inside, the all-new Safari witnessed a roomy cabin with a host of premium elements on board. Feature highlights include an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, connected car technology, a 9-speaker JBL sound system. Besides, it is also equipped with an electronic parking brake, a 7-inch semi-digital instrument panel, ambient lighting, a powered driver’s seat, and a panoramic sunroof. On the safety front, Tata equips its new SUV with essentials like six airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, a rear parking camera, rear disc brakes, and a corner stability program.
Talking about the powertrain, the next-gen Tata Safari carries over the outgoing 2.0-litre Kyrotec diesel engine from the Harrier. Paired with either a 6-speed MT or AT, the vehicle is capable of churning out up to 170PS of power and 350Nm of torque. Apart from the diesel unit, the new Safari SUV could also be available with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol option along with an AWD in the future. Currently, the Tata Safari 2021 is challenging the likes of the Mahindra XUV500, MG Hector Plus, and the Hyundai Alcazar.
2021 Renault Kiger
Launch date: February 15, 2021
Ex-showroom price: Rs 5.45 – 9.72 lakh*
The list of the top five new car models carries the Volkswagen Tiguan 2021. In terms of features, the French automaker equips its sub-4-meter SUV with a long list of premium elements. Some highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, LED headlamps, and wireless charging. More to that, it also gets an auto climate control, a PM 2.5 air filter, and a push-button start/stop. On the safety front, the updated Kiger comes with four airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.
In its latest avatar, the Renault Kiger is given an upgraded BS6-compliant 1.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. While the former is good for 76PS of power and 96Nm of torque, the latter can produce 100PS and 160Nm. Transmission-wise, while both units come with a standard 5-speed MT, the naturally-aspirated unit also gets an AMT gearbox. The turbocharged motor, on the other hand, comes with an optional 5-speed CVT. In the market, the 2021 Kiger SUV rivals the Toyota Urban Cruiser, Kia Sonet, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, and the Nissan Magnite.
2021 Maruti Swift
Launch date: February 24. 2021
Ex-showroom price: Rs 5.73 – 8.41 lakh*
Topping off our list is the Maruti Swift. Earlier this year, the domestic auto giant gave its hot hatchback some subtle tweaks to better secure its high position in the list of best new cars in India under 10 lakhs. Aesthetically, 2021 Maruti continues to appeal to domestic buyers with its stylish appearance. The most noticeable exterior modification may refer to the grille that has been witnessed a sportier mesh and new chrome insert along the horizontal axis.
Moving to the inside, the new Swift also witnesses more safety features and comforts. In addition to a long feature list of a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, height-adjustable driver seat, auto AC, it is now available with cruise control, auto-folding outside rearview mirrors, and a 4.2-inch TFT display for the driver’s multi-information color display.
