At launch, there are some new and modified games for the PS5, including Spider-man: Miles Morales in PS5 version, “Sackboy, A big Adventure” and “Demon’s Souls”, a reworking of the original “Die a thousand turn to make progress’ game from FromSoftware. The PlayStation 5 is also compatible with PS4 games, which immediately expands your options enormously.

The PlayStation Login
If you log in to the console with the same account as on PS4, some of the games from that console will also be added to your library immediately. Games that you have purchased via the PlayStation Store can be copied from your PS4, but of course you have to download them again. Everything you bought online for PS4 will work on PS5. From full titles about indies to PS3 or even PS2 titles that you bought in a bundle for PS4, for example. The same applies to games that you downloaded via a PlayStation Now subscription, as long as they are still within your subscription.
For other games it gets more complicated. Some of the titles in your library will have a lock icon. These include both games that no longer work (because they were only available for a limited time in PlayStation Now, for example), and games that you bought on Blu-ray that require a physical disc.
However, you can just play the latter. For example, a simple test shows that we just have to reinstall Persona 5. The PS4 version of Devil May Cry 5, of which a special PS5 edition will be released, can also be installed, although you play the game in Full HD quality instead of 4K resolution, and without the extra gadgets that the new ones offer.

And then there are the games that have disappeared from the game library for some reason. Not all games from our PS4 library show up here, though there’s always a chance a November patch will fix that problem. But don’t let that disappearance stop you, they will probably work too. We test the system by taking half our PS4 collection out of the closet and loading it into the PS5’s (quite noisy) Blu-ray player. This sample did not reveal any games that are not compatible. There is no need for an update from the developer.
In the run-up to launch, there was talk of certain games not working on the console, including ‘Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate’. Publisher Ubisoft has since retracted that notice, and we didn’t have any of these games in our collection to test them ourselves. It’s always a good idea to check compatibility before buying a PS4 game to play on PS5. In the vast majority of cases, however, that seems to be the case.
The only thing that strikes us here is that loading times for the PS4 games are present. So they don’t get shorter right away because the newer console is more powerful. Much of this probably has to do with the SSD, and the fact that these games weren’t designed to take full advantage of the newer console’s capabilities. So don’t expect magically improved performance.
Another important thing to know before you throw the PS4 in the garbage: none of the games we tested were able to retrieve save games from the previous console. Some newer titles would support this ‘cross-save’ function, allowing you to continue playing a PS4 game on PS5. However, that is certainly not a standard feature, and it may only work with a PS Plus subscription and the associated saves in the cloud. If you have eighty hours of game progress in a game on PS4 that you don’t want to lose, it’s best to keep the console for a while.
