Becoming a lawyer is no easy task and the consideration should not be taken lightly. Here are 6 general steps to take to become a lawyer: complete a Bachelor’s degree, pass the law school admission test, identify law schools and complete applications, earn a Juris Doctorate degree, pass the bar examination, and advance your career.

Complete a Bachelor’s Degree

Completing a bachelor’s degree is going to be your first step on your journey to becoming a lawyer, which is going to be quite possibly your easiest step. Be sure to not look too far ahead in this step. The task can seem daunting at the beginning of your journey and may become overwhelming if you look too far ahead. After 4 years of schooling, you will be ready for your next step.

Pass the Law School Admission Test

The Law School Admission Test (also known as the LSAT) is a test that is taken before even going to law school. It is a way to determine whether or not you are ready to be able to handle that first year of law school. It can test your readiness (in short) of being able to endure what is likely going to be a very grueling and difficult experience. Law school is not for the faint of heart.

Identify Law School and Complete Applications

Your next step will be to identify any and all law schools that you would consider attending. Of course, an array of applications must be completed and reviewed before you may or may not be accepted.

Earn a Juris Doctorate Degree

A Juris Doctorate Degree is an honorary degree awarded to those that endure and succeed a three-year professional law program. It is a long and grueling process and that is where your perseverance comes in handy. Even yet, this is not the end of the process. This is just another step to being able to practice law in the United States.

Pass the Bar Exam

A Bar Exam is a test that is designed to measure the skills and knowledge that each lawyer must have in order to become a licensed lawyer. It is created by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. It can be used to apply in multiple jurisdictions. The UBE (or Uniform Bar Examination) is broken into 3 sections; the Multistate Bar Examination, the Multistate Essay Examination, and the Multistate Performance Test. Pass this and you will be one step closer to becoming a lawyer.
